OUR STORY

Sismo Mezcal was created in 2017 when our founders traveled to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to document the damage from that year's earthquakes in Oaxaca. While making a documentary about the impact on the education system, they went door to door collecting stories and connected deeply with the local community. The warmth and hospitality they experienced inspired them to find a lasting way to help Oaxaca. Since one of the founders loved mezcal, the idea emerged: to use one of Oaxaca’s most iconic products to create a sustainable business with a philanthropic mission. That’s how Sismo Mezcal was born.

PARTNERSHIP

Inspired by the indigenous custom of El Tequio, we started looking for producers in Oaxaca that shared our same passion for maintaining and improving the Oaxacan community. They had to meet certain requirements; be a producer with a long history in making high-quality artisan mezcal, be small manufacturers with the desire to grow with us long term, not producing for other mezcal brands, have their own supply of maguey, and more than anything, that they were interested in our mission. The idea of Sismo is to help the people who work with us grow equally, never leave anyone behind. One producer stood out from our search— the Diaz Blas family from Santiago Matatlan. This was how the Diaz Blas family entered our lives, and Sismo mezcal began to take shape.
